Africans are known for their vibrant and rich cultural heritage. If you were present at this ceremony, you would have witness the exotic and fabulous performance of the
African contingent from INTI University.
The parade which marks the celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Kuching as a City was well attended by foreigners from all part of the world. It is understood that the Street Parade is a parade of cultures with lavish displays of multicultural costumes, music and dances to crown the celebration of Kuching as a City. The theme for this year is “DOWN MEMORY LANE”.
The African contingent from INTI University impressed the crowd with their fire-eating stunt while the ladies performed the twisting of waist dance that ended with a pole-dangling stunt by one of the members. A lot of foreigners including local were mesmerized by their talents
The Parade which was opened to the first 70 contingents that have successfully and officially applied to participate coincided with the celebrations for the City Day Remembrance Ceremony was said to be spectacular and the officials congratulate the participants for their excellent efforts and enthusiasm.
In the parade, Each contingent comprises not less than 20 participants, and not exceeding 100 participants. The Parade took off from Jalan Padungan (entrance to Jubilee Ground) to the grandstand at Jalan Tun Haji Openg, in front of St. Thomas’ Cathedral and Merdeka Palace. Aesthetic display fronting the main stage is normally allowed but limited to 3 minutes and according to the rules, any contingents exceeding that time will be severely penalized by the judges and the organizing committee. All contingents also performed a pocket show fronting the Hilton Hotel along the way.
How it happened
In the Citrawarna parade, each contingent is allowed to perform for three minutes and the less of the contingent will stop moving whilst the group at the front does its performance in front of the VIPs and whilst it is stopped, the remaining parade groups give their performance to the crowd lining the route…just as was done very successfully with the Kuching City Parade last year.
In doing this, the spectators along the route get a chance to see the performances of each group and the groups themselves get more practice and are motivated before their final performance in front of the VIPs.
However, some foreigners said that the organizers of the Citrawarna Parade and those who organized last year’s Kuching Parade managed to keep the parade moving with no long waits which was not the case this year…Apart from this remark, all went very successfully. our staff, Mr. Stephen Obi was there to capture the event. watch the photo gallery of the event here
